An empty, large, hilly field with a high level of radiation on the outskirts of the ghost town of Pripyat resembles a scene from a science fiction film. Burnt earth, signs of radioactive danger. What kind of place is it?
Such places in Chernobyl are called burial ground (radioactive waste disposal site) or simply “burial ground”. These fields are located throughout the Chernobyl zone. Today we will show you one of the most interesting burial grounds of the Zone: burial ground “Sandy Plateau” in the city of Pripyat.
It is located on the outskirts, between the city line and the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. After the accident, radiation levels on the plateau were high: up to 9 x-rays (hundreds of thousands of times higher than normal).
The liquidators decided to use this field for the burial of radioactive materials, and in particular, things from the abandoned apartments of Pripyat were buried there.
One interesting fact: before the accident, it was planned to build microdistrict number 6. on the Sandy Plateau. Instead of bright plans, people were forced to make a burial ground out of a beautiful plateau near the Pripyat River. Peaceful Atom took away the land from the people of Chernobyl, part of the chic Ukrainian woodland.
Today, radiation levels on the Sandy Plateau remain high: 20,000 μR / hour (666 times higher than normal).
Even hundreds, if not thousands of years, this land will be dangerous for all living things!
